Quality Journalism remains also in 2018 an important pillar of the activities of the Greece Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation. The objective of the seminar series on journalism is to provide the participants with technical expertise on the latest media trends, as well as pose ethical and conduct questions on journalism. The content, preparation and execution of the seminar series is done by Eleftherios Petropoulos, KAS Research Assocate, and Elina Makri, Freelance Journalist.

The first Seminar of the year took place on 21 March in Tzaferi16 and its subject were the legal aspects of the journalistic profession.

The first speaker, Dr. Oskar Josef Gstrein, Post-Doc research fellow at the Security, Technology & e-Privacy (STeP) Research Group at the University of Groningen presented the relevant European and International legal frame and pointed out their influence on the national legal systems. On the basis of the case-law of supernational courts, he shed light on the evolution of this relatively new area of law taking into consideration the rapid technological changes. Special mention was made to the protection of the right to personality, the right to be forgotten, as well as the framework pertaining the surveillance of public spaces.

The Greek national system of laws was discussed by Dimitrios Anastasopoulos, eminent attorney-at-law, member of the Board of Directors of the Athens Bar Association and co-founder and president of the Union of Greek Lawyers “eThemis”. Mr. Anastasopoulos presented the main provisions of the Constitution and other sources of law, as well as the Code of Ethics of Journalists, whereas he analysed the main points of cases from the highest and lower courts of the country. Among others he focused on the matters of defamation, the publishers' responsibility and the copyright.

Last but not least, the experienced journalist, Tasos Telloglou (SKAI TV - Kathimerini) contributed to the discussion with a pure journalistic point of view. He discussed cases he has worked on, for some of which he had to testify before the court.

The vivid discussion with the more than 100 participants of the audience focused on different points of all three presentations and was a proof of the importance of the topics discussed, as well as the strong interest of the participants.
