The United Nations and North Korea

by Stefan Friedrich, Victoria-Charlotte Browning

A Balancing Act between Sanctions and Humanitarian Assistance
A leadership that defies all pleas for reason stands opposite a population that faces dire humanitarian needs. While the Security Council is desperately attempting to uphold the Non-Proliferation Treaty and trying to circumvent a nuclear arms race in the Asia Pacific by imposing drastic sanctions, six residential UN agencies and several more non-residential UN bodies are providing humanitarian assistance to the impoverished country.

Is the UN on the cusp of changing times?

by Stefan Friedrich

Background information and a first assessment of the budget cuts announced by the new US government.
Newly elected US President Donald J. Trump submitted his first draft budget on 16 March 2017. In addition to important increases in the defense budget, cutbacks were announced to the draft budgets for the departments of foreign and environmental affairs. In particular, the proposed cuts to the State Department budget could have a significant impact on the work of the United Nations as the United States is currently the greatest individual donor to the UN as a whole. This explains why the latest announcements from Washington have been met with great concern on the East River.

Muslims in state and society worldwide

by Katharina Senge, Stefan Friedrich

Social commitment and political participation from africa to asia and in europe
Compatibility of Islam and democracy has been a controversial subject of debate around the world for many years. The discussions often arrive at conclusions and answers that have little to do with the realities in Muslim societies. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung decided to conduct the project entitled “Muslims in State and Society worldwide. Social Commitment and Political Participation” this year. The crucial insights from the workshops are combined in this publication.

KAS in Asia

by Stefan Friedrich

From “Help to Help Themselves” to a Dialogue between Equals
September 2004. A telephone call comes in from Beijing. The caller is a representative of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China. His question: a draft of China’s new company law is now available. Would it be possible for German experts to conduct a critical review of the draft and to make suggestions for improving it during a workshop organized for this? Would the KAS be able to support this exercise? Requests like this are the result of the trust that has been built over many years of successful cooperation with local partners.
