The EU Commission Strengthens the Rule of Law

In the European Union, the “Instruments of the Rule of Law” will become even more important in the future. There is a plan underway to publish an annual report on the Rule of Law to reflect the situation in all Member States. The declared aim is to take action much earlier than in the past – meaning, that action should already be taken in the process of promoting an awareness of the Rule of Law.

The Rule of Law is one of the fundamental values of our shared European set of values. The EU Commission has long been committed to strengthening the Rule of Law within the Union. In its Communication of 17 July 2019, the EU Commission presents its blueprint for action to further develop the existing and new mechanisms. It is evident that the Commission´s aim is to take action much earlier than it has hitherto been the case. The following paper presents the individual suggestions, places them in an overall context and takes a critical look at them. The mills of Brussels grind slowly. What will become reality depends on the political struggle in the coming months and probably years. It is to be expected that the process id strengthening the Rule of Law within the EU will be continued under the designated EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen."
