Auch in Irland wurde an diesem Wochenende Geschichte geschrieben: Erstmals bei nationalen Wahlen ist es dem EVP-Mitglied Fine Gael gelungen, den Erzrivalen Fianna Fail zu besiegen. Diesmal gelang es gleich zweimal, sowohl bei den Europawahlen, wie bei den zeitgleich abgehaltenen Kommunalwahlen (s. Anhang).
