Matthias Barner

Matthias Barner has been working for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in Germany and abroad since 2009. He is currently preparing for his next assignment abroad as head of the Ukraine country project. Most recently, he was responsible for European security policy at the Foundation’s headquarters in Berlin. Prior to that, from 2020 to 2024, he served in London as head of the UK and Ireland office. From 2016 to 2020, he led the country projects for the Czech Republic and Slovakia, based in Prague. From 2012 to 2016, he served as the foundation’s press spokesperson in Berlin. From 2009 to 2012, he headed the KAS Media Program for Southeast Europe, based in Sofia.
Prior to joining the KAS, he worked at the CDU’s federal headquarters and in the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, including as spokesperson for the CDU of Germany from 2006 to 2009. Matthias Barner studied political science, public law, and Romance languages in Bonn and Bologna. He served as a conscript in the Bundeswehr and is a reserve officer.
