Nils Wörmer

Head of Regional Programme Security Dialogue for East Africa


Nils Wörmer has headed the newly established regional program Security Policy Dialogue East Africa (SiPoDi) based in Kampala, Uganda, since June 2022. Previously, he headed the International Policy and Security Division (IPuS) in the AuB Department from September 2018 to May 2022.


Prior to 2018, he served as the first foreign staff member of the Syria/Iraq Foreign Office, which was established under his leadership in Beirut starting in September 2015. From 2013 to 2015, Mr. Wörmer was the head of the Afghanistan Foreign Office, based in Kabul. Prior to joining the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, Nils Wörmer worked for three years as a research associate at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) in Berlin.


Nils Wörmer served for twelve years as a temporary soldier in the German Armed Forces, where he was first trained and deployed as a paratrooper officer and later as an intelligence officer. From 2007 to 2009, he was deployed for a total of 15 months as a member of a reconnaissance unit in Kabul and Kunduz. Wörmer is a reserve officer (with the rank of lieutenant colonel).


Nils Wörmer studied political science, sociology, modern history and Islamic studies in Hamburg.
