Indonesia's chairmanship as an opportunity for more European involvement in the region

Indonesia took over the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the beginning of the year. With the unresolved conflict in Myanmar and Timor-Leste's accession process to ASEAN launched in 2022, the Indonesian chairmanship faces two major construction sites at once. But the elephant in the room is China's increasingly challenging role in the region. Germany and the EU also have a role to play here.

The changes for Palestinians under the new government of Benjamin Netanyahu and his ultra-right alliance became apparent within days after taking office: The visit of Israel's new Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, to the Haram al-Sharif / Temple Mount was a signal that the course of the new ultra-right government denies the Palestinian population any territorial rights. Settlement construction in the Palestinian territories is not only to continue, but to be significantly expanded. These measures are being met by an increasingly frustrated Palestinian population having no real prospects for the future, while violence is on the rise.

Bias in journalism – the more equal the better?

Media bias: The journalistic profession is homogeneously occupied; is this noticeable in the end product or in the audience's perception?

A significant part of the political spectrum in the population does not see itself represented in professional journalism; this can lead consumers to so-called "alternative media" and polarising providers. Journalistic newsrooms therefore need more diversity of perspective, not only on gender and origin, but also on different (political) worldviews.

Energy Mix in Germany

Gas and nuclear energy accepted as a temporary solution

Due to developments in the energy market, the question of what energy mix Germans prefer until energy demand can be met by renewable energy is being raised again. The hierarchy is clear. Half of the Germans consider gas suitable for intermediate use. In the case of nuclear energy, 44% advocate its use until renewable energies can cover energy demand. Coal, on the other hand, is considered suitable for intermediate use by only a minority. 25% believe that coal should be used more or equally in the future.

Research and Sources on Contemporary History

In der Reihe „Forschungen und Quellen zur Zeitgeschichte“ veröffentlicht das Archiv für Christlich-Demokratische Politik seit 1980 wissenschaftliche Studien zur Christlichen Demokratie, Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und der CDU sowie Biographien wichtiger Repräsentanten. Zu den 50 bisher erschienen Büchern zählen auch Quelleneditionen, wie Protokolle von Parteigremien oder Tagebücher von einflussreichen Politikern. Die Publikationen sind im Buchhandel erhältlich.
