On its environment, ideology and how it understands politics

Since its founding in 2013, the Alternative for Germany has undergone a transformation in its programmatic and strategic orientation. From the outset, a pronounced "anti-establishment attitude" was a unifying factor. Today, this is complemented by a positioning in the party system that is driven, in particular, by the AfD's forefront – the extreme New Right with its "friend-or-foe" thinking. This makes the party part of a milieu that relies on "cultural hegemony from the right" – a hegemony of ethnocultural unity, among other things. The party's positions in the fields of democracy, the concept of the people, and the image of history correspond with this thinking. This text presents strategies and ideologems in the milieu of the AfD as well as the AfD itself, its program and understanding of politics.

Christian democrats in crisis?

Status and perspectives of Europe‘s Christian democratic parties

From the 1980s onwards, Christian democratic parties began to decline. While some parties came down rather steeply, others went through a succession of ups and downs. However, Christian democratic parties are still widely spread. They exist in 25 European countries. When this study was concluded, they formed part of the government in twelve of these countries, and in five, they furnished the head of the government. Contrary to the general trend in this family of parties, some Christian democratic parties were able to effect a recovery, albeit to a widely varying extent. The climbers were successful because they laid greater stress on subjects like internal security and migration control, liberal positions, new candidates, and personalised campaigns. On the other hand, concentrating on the imagination of groups holding conservative values is of no avail because the groups that once formed faithful reservoirs of Christian democratic voters are now dying out. Having several wings and using these to mobilise different milieus is helpful to a Christian democratic party. Especially in times of growing societal pluralisation, this is crucial for a party to remain successful or become successful again.

Das Ende der Stabilität? Parteien und Parteiensystem in Deutschland

Über Jahrzehnte war das Parteiensystem der Bundesrepublik von beachtlicher Stabilität, der Dominanz der Volksparteien und der Fähigkeit zu Kompromissbildung und Interessenausgleich geprägt. Die Bundestagswahl 2017, die zähe Regierungsbildung danach und die ersten Monate der erneut gebildeten großen Koalition legen die Vermutung nahe, dass es damit vorbei sein könnte. Die Volksparteien verlieren an Zuspruch, während Fragmentierung und Polarisierung im Parteiensystem zunehmen. Der vorliegende Band analysiert die Situation des deutschen Parteiensystems gut ein Jahr nach der Bundestagswahl und porträtiert die Parteien, die in den 19. Deutschen Bundestag gewählt wurden.

Over the last few years, populist candidates and parties in Europe, not to mention on other continents, have achieved remarkable success. Some of them such as the Law and Justice Party in Poland or the Swiss People’s Party, have in fact become the strongest parties in their countries, occupying the highest state and government offices there. Populism is not a new phenomenon, however. This study examines how parties to the left and right of the centre in Europe react to their right-wing and national populist rivals.

In the run-up to the European elections of 2014, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung predicted that the EU’s opponents would grow in strength. Over the last ten to fifteen years, several protest parties whose original attitude had been mainly critical towards foreigners, Islam, or immigration had set up the European Union as their second enemy stereotype. The forecasts were overtaken by reality: Never before have there been as many EU opponents sitting in the European Parliament as now.
