Aftermath of the EU Referendum and What Comes Next: Iceland bets on the status quo

by Auðunn Arnórsson
On 29 August, Icelanders went to the polls to vote on whether to resume EU accession negotiations. After a fierce campaign by the Yes and No movements, a narrow majority rejected the proposal. 52.8% voted "no" and 47.2% voted "yes", on a strong turnout of 82%. However, Iceland remains closely tied to the EU and is a participant in its internal market through the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement.
