“Tariffs” is one of the most beautiful words, Donald Trump stated during the election campaign. For him, levies on imports into the USA are a solution to many problems: he aims to use them to reduce trade deficits, generate additional revenue to lower income taxes, boost domestic production, and generally put pressure on other countries—even when trade issues are not involved. For example, he threatened Mexico and Canada with higher tariffs if they did not stop the influx of immigrants and drugs into the USA.
