KAS Media Africa proudly hosted the Local Journalism Conference 2026 in Salima, Malawi, bringing together journalists, editors, media trainers, and subject‑matter experts from across Africa and Europe for several days of insight, collaboration, and exchange.
The conference provided a platform to explore the rapidly evolving landscape of local journalism. Discussions focused on pressing topics such as media freedom, newsroom sustainability, digital audience strategies, artificial intelligence, trust in news, and the growing challenges posed by disinformation. Across all sessions, participants shared practical experiences and grounded perspectives reflecting the realities of reporting in diverse and often demanding environments.
A key moment of the event was the KAS Media Africa Local Journalism Award 2026, which honoured three exceptional journalists whose work demonstrates the vital role of local storytelling in informing the public, strengthening communities, and holding power to account. You can read more about the winners and find their submissions here: Local Journalism Award 2026
We extend our sincere appreciation to all participants for their openness, expertise, and commitment to strengthening local media ecosystems. Thank you for contributing to a meaningful and inspiring gathering. We look forward to continuing this important work together in the year ahead.
