Being part of a larger project aiming to revitalise the small scale enterprises sector in the Pacific region after the coronavirus pandemic in particular and to expedite the Pacific region’s development in general, the event featured speakers from Australia (Pacific Trade and Invest), the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Malaysia (ReGov Technologies), Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Timor-Leste, the USA (ACCESS Advisory), and Vanuatu. Topics on day 1 included support mechanisms for Pacific entrepreneurs, and policy approaches to support entrepreneurship and innovation. Day 2 was concerned with regional approaches to strengthen the enabling environment, unlocking the potential of the digital economy, creating an inclusive and climate resilient business ecosystem, and possible future interventions. The roundtable revealed common challenges faced by Pacific Island states, including the costs of their digital transformation, skills shortages, a lack of equipment and infrastructure as well as mistrust in digital financial services. On the positive side, speakers and participants noted the opportunities that come, for example, with the use of artificial intelligence tools and the implementation of circular economies for the development of their emerging micro, small and medium sized businesses.
