Am 5. Januar 2020 wählte Kroatien im zweiten Wahlgang den sozialdemokratischen Kandidaten Zoran Milanović zum neuen Präsidenten. Es war die insgesamt siebte Präsidentschaftswahl in Kroatien, die fünfte nach dem Tod von Franjo Tuđman, dem ersten kroatischen Präsidenten. Der Wettstreit um das Präsidentenamt wurde stark von den bevorstehenden politischen Ereignissen geprägt: In der ersten Jahreshälfte 2020 hat Kroatien erstmalig die EU-Ratspräsidentschaft inne und der regierenden HDZ stehen parteiinterne Wahlen bevor. Im Herbst folgen die nationalen Parlamentswahlen.
