Dr. Matthias Oppermann

Since October 1, 2018, Matthias Oppermann has been Head of the Department of Contemporary History, and since January 1, 2020, he has also served as Deputy Head of the Department of Academic Services / Archive for Christian-Democratic Policy (WD/ACDP). From 2008 to 2018, he worked as an academic associate at the Chair for 19th and 20th Century History at the University of Potsdam. He studied History and French Philology at the Universities of Bonn and Reims and earned his doctorate at the University of Bonn in 2006 with a dissertation on the French philosopher and sociologist Raymond Aron. His dissertation received the Bruno Heck Prize awarded by the alumni of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. In April 2018, he completed his habilitation at the University of Potsdam on the emergence of British liberal conservatism (1750–1850). From 2006 to 2007, he gained his first professional experience as a speechwriter for the Minister of State for Culture and Media. He is an alumnus of both the scholarship and doctoral fellowship programs of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and teaches Modern History as an adjunct professor at the University of Potsdam.
